“A traditional, classic, old-school neighborhood barbershop.” That’s how principal owner Anthony Lane describes his vision for NoDa Barbers. The shop opened in NoDa on December 19 on the corner of North Davidson and E. 35th Streets, next to Fu’s Tattoos.
Anthony, who grew up on the upper west side of Manhattan, moved his business from University City because, as he tells it, “NoDa reminds me of home.” He describes the diversity and neighborhood vibe as similar to his neighborhood in New York, where he said he had friends of all nationalities, races, and backgrounds.
Besides offering classic cuts, shaves, and skin and scalp treatments, Anthony sees himself as a consultant for skin, scalp, and “all textures of hair” for men. Prior to opening, Anthony advertised everywhere from Yelp to Gayborhood and says the initial response has been overwhelming.
Anthony and part-owner Evaristo Fernandez, a native of the Dominican Republic, are already hunting for another multi-dimensional stylist to join their team. They want a “people person” who will treat clients “like family sitting in our living room.” Anthony points out that his family of customers have included men off the street, well-known current and former Charlotteans, and occasional visitors such as Al Jefferson, Danny Hamlin, Patrick Ewing, and Nelly.
A 2011 Johnston and Wales graduate who also does catering and has recently worked as a chef at venues such as Del Frisco’s and the Concord Children’s Academy (his favorite cooking gig), Anthony lives in Concord with his wife Melissa, a senior underwriter for Hartford Insurance, and their 10-year-old daughter Bryce.
