WHEN:
09/05/2008 @ 9pm
WHAT: Toubab Krewe -- Josh Phillips Folk Festival supports
WHERE: The Neighborhood Theatre
Toubab Krewe's strong Malian flavor is peppered with tastes of Caribbean, Jamaican, and, as the band puts it, "dirty south" music. Most of the band members' roots are in Asheville, North Carolina, and their southern neighbors often confuse the harp-like ngoni and kora for a banjo. Yet, Toubab Krewe's Teal Brown, Drew Heller, Justin Perkins, David Pransky, and Luke Quaranta emanate the energetic spirit that is an essential element of the dance music in Africa. Toubab Krewe's name is, in fact, a stellar reflection of their multicultural musical interests. The word "toubab" means "white people" or "foreigners" in the Malinke and Bambara languages and is used in a non-derogatory way to refer to white people all over West Africa. The spelling of "Krewe" references New Orleans, which Brown says is "because New Orleans is the gateway through which so much music came to us--ragtime, blues, jazz. It's a reference to that portal." The band has spent extensive time in West Africa studying and performing with musical legends such as Lamine Soumano, Vieux Kante, Madou Dembele, and Koungbanan Conde. Thus, their use of traditional instruments like the soku, kamel ngoni, and kora, is not only professional and informed, but inspired and natural, as well.

WHAT: Pinback -- Kylesa supports
WHERE: The Neighborhood Theatre
Over the past nine years, Rob Crow and Zach Smith have created a reputation for themselves as devout melody makers. Their 2007 offering Autumn Of The Seraphs however is undoubtedly Pinback's most sonically adventurous outing yet. Their trademark, a paradox of passion and self-containment, is markedly crisper, more immediate and actualized to the fullest. Harp said "Pinback never forgets pop's first rule: It's the hooks, stupid." Associated Press declared "This two-man band from San Diego is really all about hooks."

WHAT: Robert Earl Keen
WHERE: The Neighborhood Theatre
When it comes to a party/concert with Robert Earl Keen, we just can't get enough...we know you love him, too. Among the large contingent of talented songwriters who emerged in Texas in the 1980s and 1990s, Robert Earl Keen struck an unusual balance between sensitive story-portraits ("Corpus Christi Bay") and raucous barroom fun ("That Buckin' Song"). These two song types in Keen's output were unified by a mordant sense of humor that strongly influenced the early practitioners of what would become known as alternative country music. Keen, the son of an oil executive father and an attorney mother, is a native of Houston. His parents enjoyed both folk and country music, and his own style would land between those genres. Keen wrote poetry while he was in high school, but it wasn't until he went to journalism school at musically fertile Texas A&M that he learned to play the guitar. He and Lyle Lovett became friends and co-wrote a song, "This Old Porch," which both later recorded.

WHAT: Buckethead w/special guest That One Guy
WHERE: The Neighborhood Theatre
As the arcane story goes, Bucketheadland was opened back in 1989 as a refuge for himself and the chickens that had raised him in a coup from an early age. To keep the chickens entertained, Buckethead learned to play the guitar while growing up, but as the mystifying story unfolds, a string of harrowing experiences and mistreatment from the farmers on-site drove the masked axeman to burn down the coup and flee with his feathered friends to a new sanctuary. That safe haven, Bucketheadland grew into a world where both dreams and nightmares intertwined into a creative force that drove the guitarist to channel that energy into some of the most unique and innovative music to ever be created. Over the past 16 years, Buckethead has not only managed his theme park, but has also had time to exercise his love of guitar playing and music by traveling all over the world playing in front of audiences and has recorded over 13 records.

Grey comes from a long tradition of Southern storytellers, and his songs oftentimes use the loss of his natural surroundings and the marginalization of the Southern culture he grew up in as a metaphor for universal truths. The band delivers his material with brilliant musicianship, resulting in music that is thought provoking, rhythmically dynamic and texturally mesmerizing.

WHAT: Bassnectar
WHERE: The Neighborhood Theatre
A freeform project that merges music, art, new media, social involvement, and community values; dedicated to a constantly-evolving ethos of collaborative creation, self-reinvention, and boundary-pushing experimentation. While existing as a mutating collaborative effort, Bassnectar is traditionally the amorphous music project of Lorin Ashton, a San Francisco based Musician / Producer / DJ, (probably the largest cult following of any DJ in San Francisco SF Weekly) highlighted by massive basslines, thick mob scene beats, freakshow energy, emotive melodics, traditional acoustic instrumentation, and fearless mashing of genres, styles, sounds, moods, and approaches. Fusing elements of midtempo breakbeats, big beat, old school hip hop and dub, DnB, glitch, IDM, electronica, death metal, grindcore, punk rock, alternative, folk, swing, and jazz; and sampling anything from the human history of sound and music, Bassnectar might be most accurately described as omni-tempo maximalism."

WHAT: Nicole Atkins
WHERE: The Neighborhood Theatre
Nicole was that kid slightly out of touch. When her friends were collecting the latest New Kids on the Block album, she was raving about Traffic or Cream. At the age of 13 she found an old beat up guitar in the attic of her house. It had belonged to an uncle who died when he was young, and she taught herself to play a Grateful Dead song. Her father turned her on to blues artists like Jimmy Reed, and allowed Nicole to sit in on sessions with local musician friends. And then she left that town, that place, behind, attending art school in North Carolina, where she played for three years with the North Carolina alt-country band Los Parasols before making a name for herself as a solo performer on New York City's anti-folk scene. She slept in an old Dodge Ram Charger on Avenue A, finally, with a little help from her friends, among them David Muller (occasionally a member of Yoko Ono's band, Fiery Furnaces and Fischer Spooner) finally discovered her own sound

Along with Elvis Costello and Graham Parker, Jackson was a part of the trio of British-based artists that challenged the punk scene and brought a New Wave sound to the United States in the late 1970s. He was popular for his power-pop and New Wave sound early on before moving to more eclectic, though less commercially successful, pop/jazz/classical musical pieces.
